I am an athlete and do eat a lot, plenty of carbs/protein, but somehow have started avoiding fats.

Nuts, seeds, using a soy margarine like Earth Balance instead of butter, it has a lot of good fats. Just try to load up on polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats and stay away from saturated fat and trans fat.
