New cat breed, Selkirk Rex, genetically different from other curly-haired cats

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Of course, pet owners may base their choice of animal companions on personality but -- as with humans -- appearance may play a large part in the selection of partner. For reasons on which the reader is free to speculate, in many human societies curly hair represents a highly desirable trait -- Sam's song in "Casablanca" recognizes this and generations of hairdressers have grown rich by offering perms. So it should come as no surprise that pet owners and animal breeders are frequently attracted by curly-haired animals. Indeed, three curly-haired varieties of cat are already recognized and have been developed into competitive breeds. Serina Filler at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna now shows that a fourth curly-haired breed, Selkirk Rex, is genetically distinct from previously known breeds and presents a genetic analysis of the new cats.

Her results are published in the current issue of the Journal of Heredity.

In 1987, a domestic cat rescued from a shelter in Montana, USA surprisingly gave birth to a curly-haired kitten. The kitten ended up mating with a Persian male and giving birth to a mixture of curly-haired and normal-haired kittens, which strongly suggested that the mutation in the rescued cat was dominant in nature: its presence on one of the two copies of the gene involved is sufficient to cause cats to have curly hair. The curly-haired kittens were attractive and were soon recognized as a new breed: the Selkirk Rex.

There are currently registered Selkirk Rex breeders throughout the world and their cats are extremely popular. Surprisingly, though, until recently there had not been any attempt to characterize the mutation responsible. Together with colleagues at the University of California, Davis and at Agrobiogen in Germany, Serina Filler and Gottfried Brem at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna have investigated the new breed and now present an initial description of the underlying mutation.

Because the mutation is dominant, Selkirk Rex cats may be homozygous (i.e. carry two copies of the mutation) or heterozygous (with one mutated and one "normal" copy of the gene). In fact, heterozygous cats are more popular as they show shorter ears, a more rounded head and a fully curled coat, all features that conform to the written standard for the breed. Homozygous cats tend to lose a large amount of hair when young, although they do not show bald areas of skin.

Filler examined the pattern of inheritance of these traits in over 150 cats, examining the DNA of most of them. She was able to show that the gene mutated in Selkirk Rex is distinct from mutations in other recognized breeds and she termed the mutation SADRE, or Selkirk Autosomal Dominant REx. Her analysis of the 20 available pedigrees suggested that the original mutation arose about eight or nine generations ago, which fits well with the breed's known history.

Cat breeds are very closely controlled and it is permitted to cross Selkirk Rex cats not only with other Selkirk Rexes but also with Persians, Exotic Shorthairs, British Shorthairs and British Longhairs. Because of this, the Selkirk Rex is a genetically diverse breed with a low coefficient of inbreeding. It seems to be closely related to Persian and British Shorthair cats, presumably reflecting the frequency with which cats of these breeds have been crossed with Selkirk Rex animals in the past. The influence of the British Shorthair seems more pronounced and this is consistent with the overall body shape of the animals.

Filler's results confirm that the Selkirk Rex breed arose from a spontaneous mutation in a single cat around 25 years ago. As the mutation is dominant it has been comparatively easy to retain and the breed appears to have a healthy level of genetic diversity because of the number of crosses with other breeds. As Filler says, "the present level of diversity within the Selkirk Rex would seem to be sufficient for us to consider limiting the number of other breeds to which the cats may be crossed. This would help it to develop a unique head and body shape and made it even more distinct."

Understanding Grief and Loss | aayahanolosha.net

Number of View: 5

Throughout the years, the 5 stages of Reduction and Grief have been well written about and also discussed. In this dissertation, I will elaborate the views that extend on the Bargaining point of grief. Bargaining is the normal reaction to thoughts of helplessness as well as vulnerability after a death of a loved one that is certainly often associated with the have to regain control. Some widespread thoughts associated with dealing can be ?if only we?d sought medical attention sooner,? ?If only we had gotten a second opinion from another doctor,? ?If only I needed tried to be a right now there more?.

Grief

I believe that the amount someone grieves is immediately proportional to the type of relationship the person had for the deceased. Seems like a simple concept, yet, it really is filled with a load of emotional baggage which may be at times hard to evaluate and even harder to be aware of. Often, the person feelings of loss is drowned by a sea of shame and hopelessness. This is one way the mind deals with problem management through loss. This happens because our brain wants to get back to scenario of ?normalcy? as quickly and efficiently as possible and uses control as its vehicle. When something undesirable happens, such as dealing with the loss of a loved one, the very first thing the mind seeks to get is some form of manage. This is usually done through seeking some form of participation as a way to fix the situation. But wait, how can someone ?fix the actual situation? when the person is deceased? It?s not like we now have the powers to get them back to life. This defeat can fall us, make us more hopeless, angry, and depressed. Your head goes into panic function and is desperately in search of a way to gain back a few some control. Therefore, the brain develops feelings associated with guilt as a function of participation. It can be almost the only thing it could do, as a default, because it has nothing in addition. Looking at it nearer, it makes a lot of sense; guilt gives the particular person a senses regarding participation, a sense of carrying out something (though their counterintuitive since the shame is a form of self punishment, it?s still carrying out something and that is an improvement on nothing at all), it?s the best way the psyche understands how to gain back a sense of handle. This guilt, is the psyche?s way of self-medicating itself over the pain of sacrificing someone. Making excessive grieving a accounts of how the person seen the lost 1 and what that individual meant to them. It could be quite humbling to know that this amount of grieving is reflective towards the amount of love and admiration the person had while using deceased. Making the greater the love, the greater and much more difficult the grieving process. Understandably, the space and type of mourning and the degree in how it affects us varies in all people. Often, I find what exactly is most helpful isn?t type of advice one particular gives, or the type of coping mechanism one particular uses. Rather than carrying out something, just resting with the person in their particular pain. Just getting there and allowing the person to go through the required motions they need to in order to make peace and move on. This task is often tougher to grasp and at instances frustrating, and sometimes producing therapy becomes beneficial. Seeking a counselor that will allow the mourner to be able to process their despair properly, work through his or her guilt, and gain a healthy sense of engagement is essential in finding interior peace towards a proper recovery.

Students Helping to Build Own Features : The Calgary Real Estate ...

High school memories can come in many forms.

Sometimes, it?s about making a championship-winning play for the team, or finishing with the highest marks in class ? but for a group of students at Jack James High School, it?s building a house.

Led by staff at Homes by Avi, students helped with home construction tasks such as framing and dry walling on a house at the school.

The model they built is called the Tristan, a 1,228-square-foot home with three bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms that has since been moved to a lot in the northwest community of EvansRidge.

For Grade 12 student Matt Pettifer, looking up at the finished product during a recent ribbon cutting ceremony was something special.

?It?s rewarding to see what it looked like after and what it looked like before,? he says. ?It?s pretty amazing.?

Pettifer says he gained plenty of ?hands-on? experience in a trade that is his career goal, adding ?I want to build houses.?

Fellow Grade 12 student Alex Wujcik, who wants to take construction at the SAIT Polytechnic, agrees.

?It was really nice,? says Wujcik.

?When I built the house, it felt like I actually had a part in today?s society and helping someone live there.?

How Hurricane Sandy Might Become a Snowpocalyptic Frankenstorm

Meteorologists are forecasting what could be the worst storm to hit the eastern United States in more than 70 years. Dubbed the "Frankenstorm" by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the system could potentially pummel the Mid-Atlantic and northeast with gale-force winds and snow at the same time. Yes, that sounds like a scene from the Biblical rapture. But the Frankenstorm isn't just possible—by the end of this weekend, it could be likely. More »

TSMC sees six months of weaker sales after record third-quarter profit

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) forecast two quarters of weaker revenue but said the boom in mobile devices that drove it to record third-quarter profit would fuel a rebound from April.

Cutting-edge 28 nanometer technology has put the world's biggest contract chip maker ahead of rivals as consumers shift to mobile gadgets like Apple Inc's iPad and iPhone and away from personal computers.

"We think the reason (for rebound in Q2) is the strength of mobile demand," Chairman Morris Chang told an investor briefing. "We expect mobile products to be strong for a number of years."

Shipments of chips made by 28-nanometer process technology, which can cram much more computing power into smaller chips and is widely sought after for mobile devices, more than doubled during the third quarter and accounted for 13 percent of total wafer revenues, TSMC said.

But rising inventory levels at end-users like automakers and computer makers have stoked concerns, and TSMC said inventory adjustment will cause a fall in fourth-quarter revenue and a "modest dip" in the first quarter of 2013.

Texas Instruments Inc, a key TSMC client, this week forecast surprisingly weak revenue for the fourth quarter, saying its customers were nervous about demand amid a deteriorating global economy.

Chipmakers Broadcomm Corp and LSI Corp have also recently forecast weak fourth-quarter revenue. Chipmakers tied to the PC chain have been among the hardest hit as customers gravitate to mobile devices instead.

RECORD PROFIT

TSMC said net profit in the July-September period jumped 62 percent to a record T$49.3 billion ($1.7 billion) from a year earlier, above the T$45.3 billion average estimate of 22 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The figure compares with T$41.8 billion in the second quarter.

TSMC said it saw revenue in the fourth quarter at between T$129 billion and T$131 billion, versus the third quarter's T$141.4 billion. Its gross margin would dip to between 45 percent and 47 percent from 48.8 percent in the third quarter.

Capital spending next year would be in "the same ballpark" as this year, Chang said. Spending this year will total $8.3 billion.

TSMC's clients include Texas Instruments and Nvidia.

Before the results announcement, TSMC shares closed down 0.7 percent, in line with the broader market. The shares are up 12 percent for the year to date, compared with a 2.7 percent rise for the broader market.

Rockford Area Historical Society News & Update

Terry Konkle Photo by Cliff Hill

Terry Konkle ? President

?

One day last week a long time friend and I did some reminiscing about Rockford athletics and considered the changes over the years. This experience caused me to recall other memories of our area, and I thought I would mention a few in this column.

Let?s begin with a few of the many places that have changed! There used to be a Texaco gas station (Fonger?s) where a bike shop is today. There was a movie theater where a parking lot now exists behind Gliks. There was a Sunoco station on the northeast corner of Fremont and Division (I often bought my Sunday paper there). A Men?s Shop run by Howard Morehouse was in part of Aunt Candy?s present day building. A barber shop with its own entrance was on Main Street in the back of what used to be Power?s Drug Store (now a frame shop). An old house stood about where the Rotary Pavilion is today.

Some readers will remember the building of the new bridge extending Division Street over the river and the removal of several homes. How about two of our well known doctors with offices in houses? Doctor Ferrand practiced out of a house where Rockford Community Federal Credit Union now does business, and Doctor DeMaagd in the house which was just renovated by Morris Builders. A lot of young athletes played on a baseball field at Rotary Park or at a very nice ball diamond by Parkside Elementary School. Fields were also located behind Valley View school for a time and then in front of the school.

Tennis courts were across the street from Parkside school on Lewis Street (basketball courts today), and gas pumps were located between the courts and the school building. I remember filling the tanks of cars used for Driver?s Education at those pumps.

The area behind the old high school on North Main (Administration Office etc. today) was our home football field for nearly thirty years and then a practice area for over forty more. Today, a community garden area has taken over part of the space.

Of course, the recent demolition of many of the buildings housing Wolverine World Wide has changed the landscape on Main Street. I am sure that many readers have their Wolverine recollections. As a teacher at Rockford High School and an advisor to the National Honor Society for several years, I only had to make a phone call to Wolverine and our annual banquet expenses would be taken care of by the company.

Finally, I need to recognize Jan Trapp and Barbara Driscoll for knowing that Fremont Street was named after a presidential candidate John Fremont (1856). Dayton Street was named after his running mate William Dayton. They lost their bid for the presidency. Next week I will present another ?Nugget of Rockford History? question concerning an event that greatly tested our community and its members. We responded in a typical positive Rockford fashion. We met the challenge ?head on? and showed all what our area could do!

University Of Utah Students Weigh In On The Debate

Monday, October 22 2012, 10:47 PM MDT

University Of Utah Students Weigh In On The Debate (KUTV) At the University of Utah, dozens of students and advisors had their eyes glued to the screen as the candidates battled in the third and final 2012 Presidential Debate.

The debate was supposed to focus on foreign policy, but the candidates kept coming back to the economy.

The stakes could not be higher for the presidential candidates, with polls showing the race in a dead heat.

Moderator Bob Schieffer says people watched the debate to judge their character. He made the point that it doesn?t matter what the questions were about, but how the candidates answered and if they seemed to be in control.

After 90 minutes of listening to the candidates in deep conversation, students at the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah weighed in with their take on the final debate.

Watch the video for what the students had to say.

D&D: Champions of Bane Looking for more!

The Church of Bane
Image
OOC Races Classes [Soon]

No Rest for the Wicked
Finally, you're back home in Dragonspur City after what felt like months of adventure. As luck would have it, you didn't come home empty handed either, a hefty pouch of gold, a few trinkets, and some looted gear thanks to all the skull cracking you've done recently. Just as you toss your gear to the floor and make yourself comfortable, you hear a loud knock at the door. Upon answering, you find a small man hooded in exotic black robes. No words are exchanged, he only holds out a small envelope, sealed with a familiar symbol on one side, and neatly written across the other are the words "Bane calls for you once more." Immediately you tear the note open, inside are five platinum coins and a rather long-winded note from an old business contact.

Greetings My Dearest Friend,

It's been sometime since we last spoke, I hope this letter finds you in good health. I write to you because the Church of our dark lord is in dire need of your help. The Temple has been fully recovered and restored in Darkwood since you reclaimed it from the foul Ghast and his minions, but we have yet to acquire a proper following and reclaiming the Temple means little with no mass. We call to you to spread the Fear and Tyranny that is our lord Bane, so that every soul across this land may once again tremble before the Black Hand. I have personally devised a series of plans that will remind the common rabble why it is they should fear our master, but this is no job for priests, we need you to go forth as our Champion, on a march of conquest for our lord in darkness.

Other news since you've been away, the ongoing effort to strengthen our forces has reunited us with our Zhentarim friends. The introductions will be made later when we speak face-to-face. Before that, I need you to handle a little business for me, we have been attempting to convert the nearby town of Dundel to our faith since the Temple was re-erected, but so far they have ignored our offerings and our threats, believing us to be nothing more than talk. You, along with some of my other agents will show them that Bane is not to be taken lightly. Burn their temples to the ground and instill fear in their souls. Bane?s pride demands it. Take their clerics alive if you can so we may sacrifice their bodies at the Temple. If anyone gets in your way, punish them. Leave their mangled bodies spiked to the ground in the center of town to die, let them serve as an example to others who want to play hero. If the filth of Cyric show their faces, crush them. Humiliate them! Make their deaths long and painful! And when you finish, meet with me at the Temple in Darkwood to celebrate your victory and learn of your next assignment.- High Priest Balthazar

A smile slithers across your lips and in a matter of moments, you burst out the door and head down the south road for Dundel.

What The Hell is Going On?
First let me welcome you to my roleplay and thank you for reading this far. If you're confused at all, this will be a Dungeons and Dragons Role Play based in the Forgotten Realms setting, the story is based off of an extremely popular campaign my friends and I have played multiple times, and I wanted to see re-done here. If it still isn't apparent, if you choose to participate, you will be playing an evil PC and there will be insane amounts of graphic imagery, gore, language, and violence, no exaggerations, if you're not comfortable with that then I'll have to refer you to one of the many neko-vampire-mylittlepony-highschool-romance adventures that seem to take place here. Also! there will be no dice rolling, stats, or so on, as I would like to see the whole adventure take place as an RP to see if it goes smoothly. [If so, I'm going to try and make something of a series of this here on the site... might be fun! ^_^]

LOOKING FOR 2-3 MORE CHARACTERS!

Heaven Help Us

Depiction of heaven at the State Hall of the Austrian National Library, finished in 1730 Depiction of heaven at the State Hall of the Austrian National Library in Vienna, finished in 1730

Daniel Gran/Wikimedia Commons.

Newsweek is dead. The 80-year-old magazine will cease publication at the end of the year, a teary-eyed Tina Brown said last Thursday. Before we sink too deeply into grief, let's all remember what lies beyond these earthly, stapled pages. Newsweek may have passed away, its paper turned to dust, but the Newsweek spirit carries on, not as matter or material, but in a state of pure electron flux, a ghostly form that rides the WiFi waves around us. Its words will rise off the printing press and be transformed into an energy that's everywhere at once, but also nowhere. The magazine will become an online angel?a Web-based publication that penetrates our minds with truth and light. In death, it will be reborn and find everlasting life. ?

Sorry, I'm getting all mixed up. I've been having a little trouble focusing since I read Newsweek's cover story from Oct. 15?the one with a picture of a hand reaching up into the clouds and a headline promising that "Heaven Is Real." It's a personal account of meeting God, excerpted from a memoir published this week, called Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey Into the Afterlife. A neurosurgeon? More than that! The author, Eben Alexander III, makes a point of saying that he's a skeptic and a scientist, a skeptical scientist who happens to have spent some time (did he mention?) at a little school in Boston called Harvard University. This science-minded Harvard skeptic never thought he'd find the truth of Jesus Christ. But the facts are just the facts: Alexander has been graced with the divine, and he'll share that grace with us. He's become a neuro-prophet.

This experiment in out-of-body consciousness began in fall of 2008, when a case of bacterial meningitis put Alexander in a coma and "shut down" his ?entire cortex.? What he means by that is never clear?you might think this state would be synonymous with death, which is sort of what Alexander claims, even though he's now alive and writing books. But it's a waste of time to quibble over details, since according to the author, the fact of his brain's inactivation is the only thing that could possibly explain what happened next. While Alexander was in the coma, and his brain was ?totally off-line? he drifted from this world of Harvard neuroscience into a land of pink and puffy clouds, and chanting flocks of angels, and a glowing orb that speaks telepathically, and a blue-eyed lady-friend, and lots and lots of butterflies. You would not believe how many butterflies there are in Heaven.

"I've spent decades as a neurosurgeon at some of the most prestigious medical institutions in our country," Alexander writes, reminding us that he's no sap. "I sympathized deeply with those who wanted to believe that there was a God somewhere out there who loved us unconditionally. In fact, I envied such people the security that those beliefs no doubt provided. But as a scientist, I simply knew better than to believe them myself." He was just like you and me, you see, at least until he fell into a coma?and flew into the sky, and entered the mind of an earthworm, was forced to reconsider all his Harvard science skepticism about the loving Lord above.

Is it even worth rebutting this interpretation? Though it's not yet published, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeons Journey Into the Afterlife has reached the Top 10 of the Amazon best-seller list, so we may as well prepare ourselves for the out-of-mind publicity that's sure to follow. For starters, Alexander says it took him "months to come to terms with what happened," as if he'd had to reconstruct the ultra-real experience after his recovery. One might timidly suggest that the story is confabulated?that is to say, his wounded brain filled in the gaps in time with a holy flight of fancy. (Perhaps his experience of "flying" came from memories of skydiving while a student at University of North Carolina?) It also seems at least half-plausible that Alexander's dreamy chit-chat with Jehovah happened in his head, as he was emerging from his coma, and during a time in which the author says he suffered from what's called "ICU psychosis." In the book?which I've had the great displeasure of perusing?he describes waking up to "a strange and exhausting paranoid universe" in which "Internet messages" showed up wherever he looked, and a "grinding, monotonous, anti-melodious chanting" filled his head. "Some of the dreams I had during this period were stunningly and frighteningly vivid," he says.

It was only later on that he worked out the fine points of his astral projection, in part by using a commercial meditation aid called "Hemi-Sync"?a $12 music CD that purports to mimic psychedelics and expand the mind with alternating beats. "Hemi-Sync potentially offered a means of inactivating the filtering function of the physical brain by globally synchronizing my neocortical electrical activity, just as my meningitis might have done, to liberate my out-of-body consciousness," he explains, as only a Harvard neurosurgeon can. Scientists who are a bit more skeptical have described these claims as silly.

Alexander claims to have been waffling on the matter of his faith before the meningitis. But the book reveals that he's always been a devout or at least a searching Christian. Long before he found himself in the "God-soaked and love-filled darkness" of his coma, Alexander took his family to church and made his children pray every night before they went to bed. His story of enlightenment is suffused with the most conventional evangelism: He was lost and now is found; he has "good news" to share with all. According to the memoir, Alexander was abandoned as a baby, spent Christmas as an orphan, and later on became a depressive alcoholic. Then he goes to a meeting in Jerusalem and finds the spot where Jesus ate his final meal, and while he's there (through some celestial stroke of luck), he contracts the deadly bug that will restore his faith and change his life and put him in a coma for a very biblical duration of seven days and seven nights.

Now, by grace of God, he's scheduled to appear on Nightline, Good Morning America, World News Tonight, and Fox & Friends. His book is almost guaranteed to be a huge success, a work of neuro-prophecy that hauls in massive neuro-profits. There's no doubt that Alexander's publisher is looking back with greedy eyes at another publishing sensation from three years ago, by the neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor. That one, called My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey, was also based on the rather dubious idea that we might draw a deeper understanding of the universe from debilitating brain damage. Bolte Taylor's rise to fame and neuro-guru-status began not with meningitis but with a cerebral hemorrhage, one that taught her how to find nirvana by allowing her "life-force power" to "flow like a great whale gliding through a sea of silent euphoria."

The participants in acc?s emploi Alberta's project will gain hands-on experience through job placements with employers in their respective fields of study to help them enter the labour market, pursue higher education or start their own business.

"Thanks to funding from the Government of Canada, this project will help qualified post-secondary graduates start their careers," said Suzanne Corneau, Executive Director, acc?s emploi.

With annual funding of more than $300 million, YES helps youth, particularly those facing barriers to employment, obtain career information, develop employment skills, find jobs and stay employed. YES includes the Skills Link and Career Focus programs and the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, which creates thousands of job opportunities for students every summer.

Economic Action Plan 2012 is providing an additional $50 million over two years to enhance YES through a new initiative that will connect young Canadians with jobs that are in high demand and help them develop tangible skills and gain work experience.

The additional funding will be delivered through two Calls for Proposals-one for Career Focus and one for Skills Link. The Calls opened on September 5 and will close on November 2. Organizations across Canada are invited to apply. Information is available at servicecanada.gc.ca.

Youth employment programs are part of the Government of Canada's broader strategy to create an educated, skilled and flexible workforce. The Government underscored its commitment to this strategy in Canada's Economic Action Plan. A key component of the Plan is to create more and better opportunities for Canadian workers through skills development. To learn more about Canada's Economic Action Plan, visit actionplan.gc.ca.

Google Recommends Three Different Methods for Mobile ...

mobile optimization, google, dailydealmedia.comOver the past few years, a growing number of consumers have accessed the internet through tablets and smartphones. For online businesses, the trend has been problematic, because PCs and mobile devices have vastly different display capabilities.

Consequently, an e-commerce flurry has ensued over mobile-optimal coding. In response to popular inquiry, Google has offered its advice on the subject.

According to the world?s number one search engine, three options are preferable for websites in the mobile age: responsive design, integrated coding and alternate domains.

Topping the list of Google recommendations is responsive web design, which utilizes coding that auto-adjusts to screens of any size. The code detects the vertical and horizontal demands of each browser ? from PCs and laptops to smartphones and tablets ? and instantly makes the proper adjustments.

Responsive design has its share of pros and cons. On the upside, it spares companies from having to spend money on secondary websites. On the downside, the coding involved is difficult to master, while the finished results are process-intensive at both ends.

According to Katrina Potter of search engine marketing firm iProspect, responsive design is simply not ready for primetime. Though it could prove ideal in the long run, the technical requirements are presently out of reach for most businesses.

While she respects the forward-thinking nature of responsive design, Potter suggests that Google has its own reasons for endorsing the concept. It all comes down to the processing involved in the crawling and indexing of duplicate pages, which can be quite taxing on search engines. Google, she insists, is simply trying to promote methods of coding that could maximize its own resources.

Google?s second recommendation for mobile adaptability involves integrated HTML, in which multiple codes are combined into one. Under this method, each page is coded with the necessary HTML for PCs and mobile devices. This too requires technical skills that are far beyond the abilities of most contemporary programmers.

Potter explains that integrated coding prompts search engines to detect which device has accessed a site and then serve the appropriate form of HTML. Since all the content is contained in the same URL, the integrated method is convenient for users who link and tweet their favorite sites.

As with responsive design, however, integrated coding is somewhat ahead of today?s capabilities. Potter points out that search engines are not always successful at reading servers. Until technologies improve, the integrated coding method is a novel yet dangerous undertaking for most businesses.

The third recommendation involves alternate domains, which have already been undertaken by many online businesses. Google, however, requires users to annotate codes in order to specify each corresponding device ? whether a site is geared for a PC or smartphone. The purpose, Potter insists, is for mobile and desktop content to rank the same amongst search engines.

Potter ultimately stresses that coding should be recommended on a company-by-company basis. Responsive design, for instance, could be an ill-suited option for companies lacking in technical know-how.

On the other hand, responsive design could be the ultimate step when a company sets out to transform itself.

Your hidden objective might be to persuade the audience to follow the new safety procedure.

Repair or Replace-What to do When Your Double-Paned Window is ...

Window condensation is a common problem for many homeowners. When the inside temperature of your home is not the same as the outside temperature, it can cause condensation to form on the inside or outside of your windows.

Sometimes, though, the condensation can occur in between the window panes, especially if you have double paned windows. If you have condensation in between your panes, it?s a sign that your window panes have separated, and your windows are now leaking air out and letting air in.

If you notice in between condensation on your windows, you have two options: repair or replace. The following information gives you a breakdown of the pros and cons for both options to help you make the best decision.

Repair
You can repair double pane windows by removing the condensation on your own using a dehumidifier. Place the dehumidifier near the window and allow it to work out the moisture on its own. You can also try to circulate the air using a fan to help remove some of the condensation or keep it from forming.

You also have the option of hiring a company to come and alleviate the situation for you. These companies will drill holes into the outside of your window to remove the condensation, and then they?ll place air vents inside to help keep the condensation from forming.

Repairing a double pane window that?s experiencing condensation is initially cheaper than replacing the window, and if you don?t have the cash to replace the window, this is your best option. Keep in mind though that once the seal is broken on a double pane window, it will not be fixed, and you will continue to notice this problem. The more that condensation builds up inside your windows, the more mold and mildew that will form inside and underneath, and eventually you can have a completely rotted window that will also affect your siding, and this can be a much bigger problem to fix.

Replace
Replacing the window can be done two ways. You can either replace only the glass portion of the window, which can be a bit more cost effective, or you can replace the entire window. If you consider yourself a handyman (or woman), you can purchase a window from your local home improvement store and install it yourself. If not, you can always call in the professionals to do this for you.

Replacing your double pane window is going to be more expensive than repairing it, but it will solve the problem completely and eventually pay for itself over time. Plus, by replacing the window, you will stop any mold and mildew formation from creeping into other areas of your home that could cause more severe (and more expensive) problems.

If you notice that your double pane windows are starting to get in between condensation, you can either repair or replace them. Repairing them will initially save you more money up front, so it?s the best option if you?re strapped for cash. But if money is not an issue, the best choice would be to replace the window before it causes more damaging problems for your home.

My 5 Favorite Sources for DRM-Free E-Books, part 1 of 2 | TeleRead ...

Project GutenbergI love DRM-free books! I know that for most people, DRM is an issue they might not think about often; if their books work, they?re happy. But for many more experienced e-book users, it?s an issue to care about.

If you acquire 100 Amazon e-books and then you buy a Kobo, how are you going to read those books? If you spend years as a loyal Sony customer and then buy a Kindle, what will you do with the books you?ve bought and loved? Unless you are blessed with some technical skills?and either a country whose laws permit format-shifting, or a moral compass that doesn?t care as much about the letter of the law?you?re stuck.

Unless, that is, you buy and read books that are DRM-free. These books can be kept forever, converted using free software such as Calibre, and read on any device you might own. But where to get them? Here are some of my favorite sources:

1. PROJECT GUTENBERG

This is the oldest e-book repository on the Web. It has over 40,000 free books, with more available through affiliates like Project Gutenberg Canada and Project Gutenberg Australia. These books are all public domain titles, but you would be shocked at what?s in the public domain these days. It?s not just Shakespeare and the Bible anymore?there are pulp sci-fi and mystery titles from the Golden Age, early issues of Scientific American and Astounding Stories, cookbooks, children?s classics (including books for very young readers, such as the complete works of Beatrix Potter) and more. Many are illustrated. Some have audio book versions. Most of the newer ones were prepared through Gutenberg?s Distributed Proofreaders program to ensure they are error-free. New books are added very frequently

Browsing can be a bit of a chore?some of the books are sorted into topical bookshelves, others are not. But if you know what you?re looking for, or stick to the ?new release? or ?most-downloaded? RSS feeds, you?re sure to find something good. And the scope of this project?their goal is to have every public domain book ever published?is incredible. This is truly an unparalleled resource, and one of the great gifts the Internet has given us.

Here are five books to get you started; I suggest downloading the HTML, as it seems to convert the cleanest.

Harvard Classics??The Harvard Classics: The vast majority of the works in Dr. Eliot?s famous ?five-foot shelf,? a collection designed to give a reader a complete classical education with only the books which might fit in a single shelf.

??The Best Short Stories: A collection of themed short story collections such as ?The Best American Humorous Short Stories? and ?The Best Russian Shirt Stories,? sorted by country or origin.

??The Golden Treasury, edited by Francis Turner Palgrave: One of the best poetry anthologies ever published. The poetry bookshelf?has some other good ones listed.

??Legends of the Jews?by Louis Ginzberg: This series draws together Jewish myth and folklore from a variety of sources, similar to how the Brothers Grimm synthesized fairy tales from multiple sources.

??Wuthering Heights?by Emily Bronte: My all-time favorite novel. A gothic story of the forbidden love between the beautiful Catherine and the mysterious Heathcliff.

2. DELPHI CLASSICS?

Interested in reading the great classics but don?t want to take the time to download two dozen Dickens books, or seek out individual volumes of Sherlock Holmes stories? Do you want to read Andrew Lang?s popular Fairy Books as they first appeared with complete illustrations? Do you want to learn more about the great artists or poets, but don?t know where to start? Delphi Classics is for you!

This store is known for their lavishly illustrated complete works collections (complete works of Dickens, complete works of Austen, and so on) but lately has branched out into two new series: Masters of Art and Masters of Poetry, which, as their titles imply, present the complete works of artists and poets. These books are very well-done, withDelphi Classics D.H. Lawrence numerous illustrations, biographical information and other goodies it would take a long time to track down on your own. They?re also updated frequently?with corrections as well, with new works, as they become available.

If you buy from Delphi?s website as opposed to the Amazon store, you can download the free updates at any time from your account.?Two drawbacks:

a. Some of the files are very large, which may slow down a less robust reader.

b. Also, you have to pay separately for the .mobi and .epub versions. I tried converting a mobi version using Calibre and after 30 minutes of trying, Calibre crashed. I don?t relish paying again for an epub if I move to a Kobo Reader down the road, and I think Delphi Classics should amalgamate their editions and let their customers download a purchased title in whatever format they choose.

My five favorites:

??Delphi Poets:?Emily Dickinson ($1.99) ? Dickinson?s complete works, with bonus biographical material including Dickinson?s letters, as well as photographs and illustrations.

??Dickens eVolume Collection?($3.99) ? The complete works of Dickens, plus biographical materials and extras, in a zipped file of 20 volumes.

??The Brontes ? Complete Works ($2.99): The complete vollected works of all the Brontes, including their childhood writing and work by their lesser-known artist brother. Illustrated with photographs and reproductions and all the usual bonus features.

??Andrew Lang- Complete Works ($2.99): The complete fairy tales books, in order, plus his other short story collections, poetry, other writing and so on. As usual, illustrated with all the usual bonus features.

??Masters of Art ? Leonardo da Vinci ($2.99): Da Vinci?s paintings in full colour, zoom-able, with bonus details. I reviewed this unique series?for TeleRead earlier this year.

(Check back tomorrow for part 2.)

49 militants killed in Caucasus operation, says Russia

MOSCOW - Russian security forces have killed 49 militants in an operation across the North Caucasus region, where rebels are fighting to carve out an Islamic state, Russia's top anti-terrorism body said on Sunday.

The agency, which serves as a mouthpiece for law enforcement agencies operating in the region, gave no time period for the operation, which was launched days after President Vladimir Putin led a meeting of the country's Security Council.

Putin has pushed the North Caucasus insurgency, rooted in two separatist wars in Chechnya, back to the forefront of national politics.

He has told security forces to ensure that militants do not launch attacks on the 2014 Winter Olympics and other high profile events planned in Russia.

"A series of coordinated measures allowed for the suppression of the activity of a number of notorious leaders, members of bandit groups and associates and allowed for a significant disruption of the bandits' supply system," Interfax quoted an agency statement as saying.

Operations, which can often take place in residential areas in the patchwork of regions that make up the North Caucasus, can last between a few hours to a number of weeks with the involvement of local police and special forces.

The Caucasus Emirate which leads the insurgency has vowed to attack the Olympic games to be held in Sochi, west of the predominantly Muslim region where they wage nearly daily violence against local authorities and law enforcement officers.

The anti-terrorism agency said nine local leaders were among those killed and that 30 militants were detained. It said 90 militant bases had been destroyed along with 26 weapons caches.

Putin has promised to hunt down Russia's most wanted man, the self-styled Amir of the Caucasus Emirate Doku Umarov.

'We will move forward,' Lance Armstrong tell gala guests

AUSTIN, Texas, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong told supporters of his Livestrong cancer charity on Friday that it had been a difficult couple of weeks but the foundation's mission must go on.

The seven-time Tour de France winner stepped down as the foundation's chairman on Wednesday after a doping scandal badly tarnished his cycling career.

But Armstrong still took the stage at a gala dinner in Austin, Texas, on Friday to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the charity's founding.

"This mission is bigger than me - it's bigger than any individual," Armstrong said of the foundation, which helps people and families affected by cancer.

"We will not be deterred; we will move forward," he said.

Armstrong, who is expected to learn on Monday whether he will be stripped of his titles, said that when people ask how he is, he says: "I've been better but I've also been worse."

And he then sought to put his professional troubles to one side, telling the 1,500 gala guests: "Let's have a hell of a good time tonight."

The 41-year-old Armstrong founded Livestrong in 1997, after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer and before he first won the Tour de France. Since then, it has raised nearly $500 million and has evolved from a focus on testicular cancer research to addressing the needs of survivors of all cancers.

Armstrong, who lives in Austin, is still on Livestrong's board and despite the doping scandal, the $1,000-a-head gala, which featured musicians Norah Jones and Stephen Marley and actors Sean Penn, Matthew McConaughey and Robin Williams, is expected to raise $2.5 million.

Guests, some wearing dresses or ties in the foundation's signature yellow, bid on auction packages, including a dinner with Armstrong that required a starting bid of $3,000.

So far the foundation's financial health appears not to have suffered from the scandal and contributions have actually risen this year as the probe gathered momentum. For the year 2012 so far, it has reported revenue of $33.8 million, up 2.1 percent from the same period of 2011.

Armstrong is expected to lose his record seven Tour de France titles after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency published a 1,000-page report last week that said Armstrong organized and took part in an elaborate, sophisticated doping scheme on his way to his unrivalled success.

The retired cyclist has always denied he took banned substances during his career but decided not to challenge the USADA charges against him.

Cycling's world governing body, the International Cycling Union, is expected to rule on Monday on the USADA report. It can either confirm Armstrong's life ban and strip him of his Tour titles or take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Sportswear maker Nike Inc and beer maker Anheuser-Busch were among corporate sponsors who said this week that they would end their relationship with Armstrong, but continue to back the foundation.

Feelings were mixed at Friday's gala.

Jeff Bennett of Portland, Maine, who was diagnosed with breast cancer nine years ago, said just before he walked down the yellow carpet into the Austin Convention Center that he came to support both Livestrong and Armstrong.

"Livestrong has provided a ton of opportunities for me to give back," he said. "Lance started it."

Michael Parmet, a cycling enthusiast from the Houston area, had a slightly different view, saying: "We believe in the purpose, not necessarily the man."

However, he added: "He's still the greatest athlete in the dope generation. He didn't do anything anyone else didn't do."

The doping scandal that has engulfed Armstrong extended further into the cycling world on Friday, when Dutch bank Rabobank ended its multi-million euro backing of professional cycling.

Ryan criticizes Obama's energy policies at Pa. rally

MOON TOWNSHIP, Penn.-For the first time in two months, Paul Ryan stumped in Pennsylvania, landing in this town just outside of Pittsburgh, and rallying a crowd of several hundred on the tarmac.

The GOP vice presidential nominee tailored his remarks to the steel country audience, hitting the president on his energy policies and accusing Barack Obama of not being "willing to lay out a second term agenda."

"If he's reelected we know exactly what the next four years will look like," Ryan said. "We'll have more of the same failed policies. More taxes, more spending, more debts, and four more years of these disastrous energy policies. Look, gas prices are more than double what they were four years ago, who knows what they're going to be if he got four more years."

Ryan often hits his Democratic opponents on their energy policy, but his remarks Saturday were more pointed, accusing the president of employing policies that would both prevent getting "people back to work and lower(ing) our energy prices."

"He'll keep his war on coal going," Ryan said of Obama. "Over a hundred coal plants are scheduled to close costing us thousands of jobs?not only do these policies cost us jobs, not only do they mean that American energy dollars go to the Middle East they are keeping us from having a boon, they are keeping us from having jobs, they are keeping us from making our pay checks stretch farther.

He ended the attack by assuring the enthusiastic group of supporters his ticket would be victorious, noting Pennsylvania would help them get there.

"The good news is none of that's going to happen because we're going to win this election and we're going to turn back on American energy," Ryan said.

The Obama campaign immediately responded to Ryan's attack on the president's energy policy saying he "either doesn't know his running mate's record or he's just not telling the truth about it."

"As Governor, Mitt Romney said a coal-fired plant 'kills people' and touted his power plant regulations as the 'toughest in the nation,' Obama campaign spokesperson Danny Kanner said in a statement. "But under President Obama, employment in coal mining hit a 15 year high in 2011 while he's making historic investments in clean coal research and development."

Ryan walked off his plane and on to the rally stage where he was introduced by GOP U.S. Senator Pat Toomey, whom Ryan called one of his "best friends in Congress."

The last time Ryan was here was Aug. 21 where he made two campaign stops in Carnegie and West Chester as well as fundraising in Philadelphia.

The most recent poll out of the Keystone State is from Quinnipiac and it shows Mitt Romney has made gains in Pennsylvania, but the president still leads Mitt Romney 50 percent to 46 percent.

Ryan's stop Saturday is more likely related to it's proximity to Southeastern Ohio than a real pitch for Pennsylvania voters. Ryan has an event about 70 miles away in Belmont, Ohio where he will be pitching the ticket to a more critical audience: Ohio voters.
