Settling into his seat last month at the witness table in a congressional hearing room, Thomas Joyce leaned toward the man on his left.
"Don't elbow me," he said.
The 57-year-old Mr. Joyce, who runs stock-trading firm Knight Capital Group Inc., was warning Duncan Niederauer, chief executive of NYSE Euronext, to brace for a squabble over the future of the U.S. stock market.
"Likewise," Mr. Niederauer shot back. Both men grinned.
