Supreme Court Year in Review

I have spent much of the last 24 hours trying to determine what, if anything, actually happened to the Commerce Clause yesterday. Some commentators (and Justice Ginsburg?s concurrence) suggest there was a serious realignment of doctrine that happened here. Ginsburg writes that ?both the court's commerce and spending clause jurisprudence has been set awry.? Others, like Walter and Judge Posner, believe it was rather a narrow holding. I think I agree with Jack that the chief justice uses this case as a marker to suggest that the Commerce Clause times may be a-changing, which may or may not be true depending on who wins the next election. This might be a good time to point out again that four of the current nine justices will be 80 by the next election. The court we see today will change profoundly in the next few years.

Match Making For Boomers: Christian Dating in an Online World

Dating can make you feel both excited and sick all at the same time. For someone looking for a relationship, not just a hook up, dating holds not only the hope for a bright and loving future but also the possibility of pain and heartbreak. Dating is rough. People aren't always what they seem. When you start the dating process, you are usually on your best behavior. But many people try to be someone they aren't in order to convince the person they are dating that they have found exactly who they were looking for. But that doesn't result in a happy ending. Sure, you want to be on your best behavior...put your best foot forward. But you still want to be yourself. The goal is not to dupe someone into being in a relationship with you. The goal is to find someone who loves you for who you are and accepts you...faults and all.

Many single Christians find dating difficult. It is assumed that the church is the best place to find that special someone but that isn't always the case. Many churches have grown so large that many people end up feeling invisible, just a random face in the crowd.

Unfortunately, unless they take part in small group activities, getting to know others can be hard. There doesn't seem to be as much socializing after church as there used to be. Back in the day, the church sermon was just the beginning of your Sunday morning. After church there would be a potluck and the congregation would gather to get to know each other better and make lasting friendships. Nowadays, many churches have abandoned that tradition and therefore people can attend the same church for years and never really know anyone.

The world we live in is chaotic and moves at a hectic pace. It seems more and more individuals follow the "get in and get out" philosophy when it comes to going to Church. We all want to be fed, but we also have busy lives and things to do so we don't stick around afterward. So what is one to do when they want to fellowship with other believers and meet someone special who just may end up being their soul mate? The obvious choice is to make an effort in getting involved with your Church or small group. Most churches have a singles group that gets together at least once, maybe twice, a week. You can also look into outreach. Focus on helping others and you may just find what you are looking for when you stop looking. But if you are really wanting to jump into dating feet first, try online dating.

There are many online dating websites available on the Internet today. Some are geared toward the general public and others are created specifically for Christians.

Even though some single Christians may feel self-conscious about stepping into the world of Online Dating, there is no reason. Christian Dating is alive and well on the Internet and using the web to start meeting new Christian singles in your area is a fantastic way to socialize with people who take their faith as seriously as you do. Where else can you go to meet other Christians? If Church isn't filling that specific desire and obviously, going to bars and clubs to meet other Christian singles is not ideal, going to the Internet is the apparent choice.

My suggestion is to find a dating website that focuses on Christian Dating so that you know that the matches you get are Christian Singles. It is disappointing to see you have a match only to find out they have no interest in the Lord. The bible does state not to be yoked together with unbelievers so it is important to restrict your dating pool to other Christians. Obviously, befriending non-Christians is a good thing because you then have the opportunity to be a witness for Christ. But when it comes to giving your heart to someone else, you need to give it to someone who shares your belief and your faith. Hence, it is advisable to utilize a Christian Dating Website when beginning your online dating journey.

Once you find the right Christina dating site and being to create your profile, be honest. Be yourself. Take to heart the fact that you are special and unique and deserving to find happiness. Do you have your faults? Absolutely. We all do. We all have things about ourselves that we wish we could change and if there is something that you want to change about yourself..something that you want to work on...go for it. But don't hide who you are by trying to stuff yourself into someone else's ideal. Putting yourself out there is scary. Rejection is difficult to take but you can't look at rejection as you being rejected. You need to change your perspective. If someone does not or can not relate to you or make a connection with you...they aren't someone that you want to waste your time with. You move on and consider that you are one more person closer to finding that one individual who you can build a life with.

Are you guaranteed love? None of us are. But we all deserve a chance at having a fulfilling, loving relationship and there is nothing wrong in trying to jump-start the search by taking the step toward online Christian dating.

But I offer a word of caution. Don't put too much pressure on yourself and your date as you embark on the dating journey. A date is just a date. Don't go into a date with expectations that this person is going to be "The One". Just enjoy the night out. Enjoy the date at face value. Taking a more laid back attitude toward dating can help ease a lot of the unnecessary tension and stress that can come from dating. Dating can be fun. Enjoy the new experiences. Enjoy the company, the movie or the dinner. At the end of the day, if there is a connection there will be another date. If there isn't....then at least you got a good meal and you move on. A little self-confidence and perspective can go a long way toward success in dating.

Jonathan's passion is bringing people together from all walks of life. He believes that everyone deserves to find love and happiness.

(AP) ? Firefighters searching for bodies in smoldering piles of the nearly 350 homes burned to the ground by the most destructive wildfire in Colorado history found a second body Friday at a residence where another person was found dead earlier.

As crews on the front lines made slow but steady progress against the flames, Police Chief Pete Carey said fewer than 10 people altogether were unaccounted for. The remains of one person were found Thursday in what was left standing of one home. He confirmed that the remains of a second person who lived there were found Friday.

The 26-square-mile blaze ? one of several wildfires burning out of control across the tinder-dry West ? was reported to be 25 percent contained, and authorities began lifting some of the evacuation orders for the more than 30,000 people who fled their homes a few days ago.

After growing explosively earlier in the week, the fire gained no ground overnight, authorities reported Friday. And the weather was clear and mostly calm, a welcome break from the lightning and high wind that drove the flames.

"The focus for today is to hold what we got," extend the fire lines to contain more of the blaze, and bring in more heavy equipment, said Rich Harvey, incident commander for the fire.

Exhausted firefighters fresh off the front lines described the devastation in some neighborhoods and the challenges of battling such a huge blaze.

"It looks like hell. I would imagine it felt like a nuclear bomb went off. There was fire everywhere. Everything had a square shape to it because it was foundations," said Rich Rexach, who had been working 12-hour days since Tuesday, when flames swept through neighborhoods in this city of more than 400,000 people 60 miles south of Denver.

"Everything you put water on, it was just swallowing it," he said.

President Barack Obama toured the stricken areas Friday after issuing a disaster declaration for Colorado that frees up federal funds. He thanked firefighters and other emergency workers, saying: "The country is grateful for your work. The country's got your back."

As residents waited anxiously to see what was left of their homes, police reported several burglaries in evacuated areas, along with break-ins of cars packed with evacuees' possessions outside hotels.

Community leaders began notifying residents Thursday that their homes were destroyed. Lists of the heavily damaged streets were posted at a high school, and residents scanned the sheets, but for many, the notification was a formality. They had already recognized their streets on the aerial pictures that appeared in the news.

"The blanket that was on my bed when I grew up, a bunch of things my mother had made," said Rick Spraycar, listing what he lost when his house in the hard-hit Mountain Shadows subdivision burned down. "It's hard to put it into words. Everything I owned. Memories."

For Ernie Storti the pain of knowing that his was one of a handful of homes spared in his neighborhood was hard.

"Our home was standing, and everything south of us was gone," he said as tears streamed down his face outside a Red Cross Shelter where he had met with insurance agents.

Authorities were still trying to figure out what caused the fire. They said conditions were too dangerous to allow them in to start their investigation.

More than 1,000 personnel and six helicopters were fighting the fire.

All eight Air Force firefighting planes from four states will be at Colorado Springs' Peterson Air Force Base Saturday and available to fight the fire, marking the first time the entire fleet has been activated since 2008, Col. Jerry Champlin said.

Among the fires elsewhere in the West:

? At least 60 homes near Pocatello, Idaho, burned in a fast-moving wildfire that started Thursday evening. The blaze covered more than 1? square miles. Officials said it was human-caused but gave no details.

? A 70-square-mile wildfire in Utah destroyed at least 160 structures, more than 50 of them primary homes. Another blaze in Utah doubled in size to 70 square miles and was threatening about 75 structures.

Blazes also burned in Wyoming and Montana.

Authorities battling six wildfires in Utah said Colorado was taking most of the available fire crews, leaving them short-handed.

Fire commander Cheto Olais said leaders at one Utah blaze had requested about 200 additional firefighters but will probably get no more than 20. "A lot of assets are going to Colorado," Olais said.

Your property may perhaps properly be your biggest investment, and like any other investment, it needs to be managed and protected. Regrettably, dwelling repairs are usually place off as a result of fees or the inability to discover a good contractor. Exactly the same goes for residence improvements. The addition of, say, a covered patio may very well be place off when it could add for the value and enjoyment of your property.

Do not fall into the trap of neglecting household repairs and property improvements just because the real estate market is down. If you?re selling, prospective customers are going to be extra-critical and choose houses which might be well-maintained and cared for. And in downtimes, eye-catching extras like sunrooms, decks, or pergolas are even more essential when purchasers have a massive choice of properties to pick from.

Repainting a home is a wonderful way to improve its appearance and give it what genuine estate agents call ?curb appeal.? Exterior painting isn?t difficult and quite a few property owners do it themselves, nevertheless it could be a large and messy job. A very good contractor can make issues lots easier by suggesting the appropriate paint for your house, showing various combinations of colors and cautiously selected accent colors, preparing the exterior, then do the painting rapidly and competently. Specialist preparation consists of power-washing and may possibly involve repairing wood, Masonite or Hardie plank siding and trim. This will guard against paint blistering, peeling or flaking later.

Windows are yet another location with the household that?s often neglected. Most houses currently have dual pane windows for additional insulation and sound proofing. Regrettably, the seals on older dual pane windows are generally leaky, resulting in condensation and residue amongst the panes. Leaking seals defeat the objective of dual pane windows, and also the glass becomes dull and ugly. Replacement windows speedily repair this dilemma. I held off carrying out mine because I feared it was a large, costly construction job. Then I learned that windows can normally be replaced without ripping out the frames, and found an excellent contractor who did the perform. In case you feel of replacing windows, also inquire about shatterproof, tinted, tempered and colored glass.

In case you have a covered patio or any other structure that attaches to your home, be certain to have a contractor verify for dry rot, leaks, cracks and also other damage. Cracks and holes may possibly deliver access for pests, so it is improved to often that speedily.

Taking care of one?s residence is fantastic enterprise and also a very good investment. No matter if it really is building additional curb appeal with shiny new paint or an inviting covered patio should you intend to sell your property, or basically keeping your property in superior condition so that you won?t incur needless repair expenses later on, proactive dwelling upkeep tends to make sense. Quite a few homeowners shy away from those tasks due to fees as well as the challenge of obtaining a superb, trustworthy contractor. Don?t give up ? they?re around and you will be glad as soon as you come across a superb a single.

College Students Compete in EcoCAR2 to Improve Vehicle Efficiency

When General Motors looks to the future of automotive engineering, they literally look to the group that embodies what the next generation of innovation will look like: student engineers.?

As such, it sponsors EcoCAR2: Plugging In to the Future.
?
EcoCAR2 is a three-year competition that provides students from 15 universities real-world, hands-on experience and tasks them to improve the energy efficiency of an already efficient vehicle, the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu.?
?
Rounding out the first year of the competition in Los Angeles, Calif., the students competed for $100,000 in prize money, as well as the keys to their Malibu.?
?
Each team successfully designed? a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle architecture, developed a hybrid control strategy using hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation tools, and began designing hybrid powertrain, energy storage, and high-voltage electrical systems.? Industry and government professionals judged them on their mechanical, electrical, control and HIL strategies, project initiation approval, outreach and business plans, and trade show display.
?
"The design and simulation portion of this competition really challenges us to balance detailed engineering analysis with overall vehicle design trade-offs," said Matthew Doude, team leader for Mississippi State University.
?
Nine-year veteran Mississippi State University took the Year One grand prize with its series-parallel plug-in hybrid electric vehicle design.? MSU has won first place three times in GM-sponsored competitions.
?
"Mississippi State University's students brought tremendous ingenuity and innovation to their vehicle designs that will help them launch successful careers as leaders in the clean energy field, ensure the United States leads in the global auto industry, and create an American economy that's built to last," said Dr. David Danielson, Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy.
?
The Ohio State University and The University of Waterloo came in second and third place, respectively.
?
Now that their vehicle architectures are finalized, the 15 teams will receive keys to their GM-donated 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, and will spend the next two years rebuilding, testing and refining it.
?
"Our goal is to provide students with the most realistic career experience, and we chose the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu for EcoCAR 2, as we believe it is a great platform to allow students to show us what they can do," said Kent Helfrich, Executive Director, electronic controls and software engineering, of General Motors. "The students are exercising their talents and are truly making great strides. We look forward to their developments over the next two years."
GM joins U.S. Department of Energy as headline sponsor, and 25 other government and industry leaders.

Screenwriter Nora Ephron Is 'Gravely Ill'

'When Harry Met Sally ... ' and 'Sleepless In Seattle' writer is not expected to survive the night, TMZ reports.

Nora Ephron, the writer of iconic romantic comedies "When Harry Met Sally ... " and "Sleepless in Seattle" among other hit films, is reportedly "gravely ill" and "not expected to make it through the night."

TMZ reports that family members are currently telling close friends of the writer/director "there is little hope that [Ephron] will recover from her current condition." The nature of her illness is not currently known, though it's been reported that Ephron is suffering from leukemia.

Word of Ephron's condition first hit the Internet on Tuesday (June 26) by way of an article published by journalist Liz Smith, a close friend of the legendary Hollywood screenwriter. In the column, Smith writes about Ephron as though she has already passed away, praising her friend's "grave" and "unexpected" humor.

"She never gave the answer I expected to anything. She was grave in her humor, which made it deadly, unexpected, truly funny and dauntingly intelligent," wrote Smith. "She seemed never to want or expect anything, while always demanding the best from the rest of us. She was — always — right and somehow left the smartest, most ambitious and silliest of us in the dust at her feet."

Shortly after publication of Smith's column, Ephron's former close friend Margo Howard wrote on : "A very accomplished writer died. Nora Ephron, from cancer."

Ephron's publisher Knopf later told The New York Times that Ephron is "still alive," according to a tweet from Times writer Julie Bosman. Knopf rep Elizabeth Lindsay said as much in a statement to the Atlantic Wire: "It's pretty critical. She's not doing well, but she's certainly alive ... The report she has passed away is not correct."

Stay tuned to MTV News for further updates on Ephron's condition.

Wolfson confirms the Samsung Galaxy S III uses its audio chip

Wolfson confirms the Samsung Galaxy S III will use its audio chip

The Galaxy S III was widely tipped to possess a Wolfson digital-to-analog converter for high quality audio output -- a feature not seen in this range since the first Galaxy S. That notion has just been confirmed by the Scottish electronics firm itself, which says its WM1811 Audio Hub has been selected for use in Sammy's flagship. The chip promises "crystal clear voice call quality" and "enriched audio playback for music and video" thanks to its 24-bit hi-fi DAC, active noise reduction circuits and other wizardry. The GS II, meanwhile, used a Yamaha DAC to convert digital data (e.g. in an mp3 file) into an analog signal that could drive a speaker (for example in your headphones), but even if most people couldn't hear the difference, audiophiles have insisted they preferred the sound in the older Galaxy. The only question remaining, which the PR after the break does not expand upon, is whether the Wolfson hardware is found in all variants of the new phone. Check out the More Coverage links for further reading.

Update: Francois Simond (aka Supercurio) tweeted us to say that the US variant of the GS III uses Qualcomm's own WCD9310 for audio, not the Wolfson. Yup, it's that multi-talented Snapdragon S4 again.

Policies to discourage drug trafficking should account for complexity of 'the game'

Policies to discourage drug trafficking should account for complexity of 'the game' [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 26-Jun-2012

CORVALLIS, Ore. Drug traffickers who want to leave the "game" behind often struggle to do so because they fear loss of power and status, a new study shows.

Those who do leave the illegal drug trade often do so because of a complex mixture of issues including fatherhood, drug use and abuse, and threat of punishment by authorities or fear of retaliation. Researchers concluded that traffickers need ways that allow them to leave the drug business without surrendering their entire identity.

The new article, now online in the International Journal of Drug Policy, is one of the first ethnographic studies to interview former drug traffickers in detail.

Tobin Hansen of Oregon State University and lead author Howard Campbell with the University of Texas-El Paso conducted detailed life history interviews with 30 former drug traffickers from the El Paso/Ciudad Juarez border, which has one of the highest homicide rates in the world.

They wanted to find out why traffickers quit selling drugs, and also discover more about their perspectives on the lifestyle and reasons why they entered the drug trade.

Hansen, who teaches Spanish at OSU, said very few studies of this kind exist. He said the former traffickers interviewed were primarily young white and Mexican-American males.

"Our primary goal in this study was to look at motivating factors why traffickers may, or may not, choose to get out of the drug game," Hansen said. "We found they often want to quit, for safety reasons, for family and just as a part of life course as they get older, but that it is very difficult to relinquish the power and status they get from the business."

Many of the study participants talked about feeling powerless, or being poor as kids, and how joining a gang or starting to sell drugs helped change this.

"In this area, it is also a rite of passage to become part of the drug business," Hansen said. "Most of the people we talked to knew someone in the business, or had family directly involved. It is very difficult for them to remove themselves from that at a young age."

Even those traffickers who had quit drug smuggling often spoke fondly of those years looking back, remembering specific moments when they were "on top" and powerful. Hansen pointed out that for young men who are used to having a great deal of wealth and power at their fingertips it is seen as a huge loss of status to become welders or janitors.

In addition, Hansen said media and the glorification of the drug trade entered into the conversations with traffickers. One man they interviewed dropped repeated references to the Al Pacino movie "Scarface," and the TV series "Gangland." More than 25 percent of the former traffickers they spoke to were trying to sell their stories to the media or to Hollywood for script development.

"Three of these guys had already written books about their lives," Hansen said. "The desire for acknowledgement and to maintain some sort of outlaw image is pretty important."

Hansen and Campbell believe the complex motivating factors for why these traffickers left the drug business points to the fact prison sentences aren't enough. They recommend policies that directly address the factors that make it difficult for traffickers to quit. Specifically, the researchers have suggested a program structured similarly to Narcotics Anonymous, where traffickers could meet and develop insight into the ways their narco-identities confined and limited their lives.

They added that these meetings could also be a place to share ideas and for them to write their life stories, thus helping them maintain a sense of dignity and excitement without engaging in the drug game.

"Policies need to start addressing that these issues are not created in a vacuum," Hansen said. "We need to look at the socioeconomic conditions, cultural values and systems that pull people into, and out of, the drug business. We also need to come to terms with the biggest factor of all the demand for these products from the United States has not dropped in four decades."

Marquee Media Center hands-on (video)

Marquee Media Center handson at gdgt Live from New York 2012

Winning gdgt's StartUp contest has its perks -- just ask recent winner Marquee, which is showcasing version 2.0 of its Media Center here on the showfloor. The imposing device, currently available on the outfit's site for $899, packs 2TB of storage, 4GB DDR3 RAM, DVD player and a 2.4GHz dual-core Intel processor into an aluminum-lidded box to let you stream a mix of online and locally-stored multimedia content. Seen from above, the unit is mostly unadorned, save for a quite sizable power button, three circular vents and two notification LEDs. Off to the right side hiding just beneath that generous metal hood, lies ports for audio I/O and standard USB, with HDMI-out on the back.

Naturally, you need a way to parse through the goods and that's where Plex XBMC -- running atop Ubuntu 12.04 -- and a custom wireless controller outfitted with a full QWERTY keyboard come in handy. According to Marquee's CEO, set-up out of the box is a no-brainer and requires nothing more than connecting to an external display and your home network (via ethernet or WiFi) to get things started. We had the opportunity to take the Media Center for a quick test spin and immediately noticed a calibration issue that, combined with the cluttered remote, made for some extremely unintuitive navigation. You can check out some pics of the startup's progeny below and, while you're at it, click past the break to view a video demo of this pricey kit in action.

Important Steps To Discover A Domain Name You'll Like

How To Approach Domain Name Research for A Business

The domain name you choose becomes more important when you have a business. But each business has it?s own unique aspects to take into consideration even if it?s an affiliate site. Brand marketing is completely different because you really need to make the case for being distinct from all the rest. That is exactly why you need to have a broad understanding about how to find and choose the most suitable domain name for your online business. Kraus KPF-1612

You can get a lot of the recommendations for good domain names right and still have a problem. It?s just about always better to have a domain that is easy to remember and short ones are good for that. Letters that are the company initials tend to make zero sense at all to people if the name is for a local business.

I have seen so many small business domain names that are an abbreviation and just cringe because the domain does not mean anything at all to other people. Besides all of that, people look at them and they cannot associate anything with them. Greenworks 26032

The most common goal with domain names is giving folks some kind of hint about what to expect. The first time anyone sees your domain or lands on your site, they are looking for signs that tell them what your site is all about. The main reason for this is people are incredibly impatient on the web and it?s been like that for years. Either you are going to help people or you will brand your site with some unique domain name. People will most often click on a site that has a descriptive domain name. One exception to this rule is if you are branding your domain name with something memorable but not necessarily descriptive. Breville BJE200XL

One type of website that is created by Internet marketers is called a sniper site ? it is a website designed for a specific purpose with very little content. They might add, for example, model numbers of particular products in the domain itself. These websites are still used today, however you want to avoid using company or brand names in the domain that you register. To avoid any legal problems, this is something you need to avoid. A worst-case scenario is that you will be fined and charged for infractions for using the brand name or company name. Don?t do this! Locating a domain name for your online or off-line business is actually very easy as you can now see. Researching this topic is something that we would ask you to do in addition to utilizing the tips we have provided. Anyone who is serious about the success of their business will utilize these tips, and not be lazy about implementing them. Potential visitors can definitely form an opinion (as you have just learned) about your website, all based upon the domain name of your choice. You can get an edge by choosing the right domain. Choose wisely and may you succeed with your business online.

Google To Pay $0 To Oracle In Copyright Case

An anonymous reader writes "In a hearing in the US District Court today, it was determined that Google will pay a net total of nothing for Oracle's patent claims against them. In fact, Google is given 14 days to file an application for Oracle to pay legal fees to Google (in a similar manner to how things are done for frivolous lawsuits). However, it is not quite peaches and roses for Google, as Oracle is planning on appealing the decision in the case.'"

91% I Wish

All Critics (46) | Top Critics (17) | Fresh (41) | Rotten (4)

What a kind and wise movie this is.

[The] film is built around performances by two real-life brothers who are as unaffected, spirited and lovable as I can imagine, and one of the pleasures of "I Wish" is simply spending time with them.

Transforms the commonplace into the extraordinary.

It's about the wonders of everyday life, and of childhood imagination.

The sort of small film of real consequence that, as a kid, I remember seeing and completely losing myself in: That was my life.

A wistful heartbreaker from the Japanese master of quiet observation, Hirokazu Kore-eda.

Like a train, "I Wish" is slow to build momentum, then it carries us away in a wondrous rush.

You watch it remembering the days when you should have walked but simply had to run, and when you believed that, if you wished hard enough, your dead pet just might come back again.

Despite its youthful perspective on adult concerns, the feature generates a few profound moments of basic need in the midst of an atypical men-on-a-mission film.

The lives of the children in "I Wish" seem to be expanding in front of our eyes, as evidenced by their changing wishes, which become bigger and more beautiful as their plan proceeds.

A flurry of details that reveal a grand canvas of love and loyalty if we take a step back.

A film that moves a bit too slowly for its own good but has remarkable cumulative strength by its emotional finale.

At its worst, I Wish is static. At its best, it has the warmth and subtlety of classic Asian works by Edward Yang and Yasujiro Ozu.

Koreeda's like a modern Ozu, documenting the trickle down effect of global economic changes on once strongly held traditions of Japanese family life.

Wistful, light and sweet.

A lovely, authentic exploration of family bonds tested by separation. Though the film is overlong at 128 minutes, it is a warm and wise winner.

If the Dardenne brothers were Japanese instead of French-Belgian, or perhaps set out to craft a homage to Yasujiro Ozu that was crossed with a whimsical yet melancholic version of The Parent Trap, it might well resemble this.

All of the kids in "I Wish" come across as real and believable, a tribute to Koreeda's directing skills working with children.

Never for a moment did I think that the two boys at the heart of Hirokazu Kore-eda's simply told and layered film I Wish were actors.

(AP) ? Residents of about 400 homes in northern Utah were being evacuated Friday after high winds kicked up a fire started by target shooters.

The roughly 1,400-acre blaze started Thursday near the Saratoga Springs landfill, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City. High winds then helped fan the flames onto tinder-dry grasslands.

Authorities were initially worried as flames moved toward property owned by an explosives company. But as winds kicked up, the fire began moving toward Saratoga Springs, and crews began focusing on saving the homes of about 1,000 people who were ordered to leave. On Friday, fire officials were calling in additional aircraft and extra ground crews.

Bureau of Land Management officials say they believe the fire was caused when a bullet hit a rock and sparked the fire. This is the 20th target-shooting related fire this year in Utah, they said.

No injuries or structural damage have been reported.

A continued mix of hot, windy and extremely dry conditions has raised the fire danger across Utah and parts of Wyoming, Arizona, Nevada and Colorado.

At a wildfire burning on over 68,000 acres in northern Colorado, some homes were being evacuated Friday because of several spot fires started by winds outside the main fire. Some of those residents were evacuated after the fire flared up on Sunday and had only returned home Wednesday.

The mix of conditions that makes it easy for new fires to start and spread and cause existing fires to flare up is expected to last through Saturday there.

The fire west of Fort Collins has now destroyed at least 191 homes. It's also blamed for the death of a woman found dead at her ranch.

Gov. John Hickenlooper's office said Friday that the governor has signed executive orders releasing $6.2 million more in state disaster money to fight the fire and two others.

The northern Colorado fire will have $5 million more available, on top of $20 million made available by a previous order. The fire has qualified for 75 percent federal reimbursement for firefighting costs, Hickenlooper's office said. A fire near Lake George will get $1 million, and the Stuart Hole fire in Larimer County will receive $200,000. The disaster money is coming partly from reserve funds.

Meanwhile, the Village People will perform a free concert Saturday in Ignacio, Colo., to raise money for relief efforts at smaller wildfires in Colorado and New Mexico, The Farmington Daily-Times (http://bit.ly/KZy86u ) reported.

Those attending the show at the Sky Ute Casino will be asked to give cash donations to help relief efforts at a wildfire that's been burning for over a month near Pagosa Springs and a blaze along the San Juan River that destroyed three structures in far northwestern New Mexico.
